Stop Everything And Learn The Secret To Creativity
Adulting is hard, and that’s the understatement of the year. When you’re running a business, it gets exponentially harder. The good news is there’s no one to boss you around. The bad news is there’s also no one there to guide you. When problems mount up, you can feel engulfed by everything. How do you pay the bills? How do you manage payroll? What happens when you’re stuck? You’re trying to think, but mental block hits you. Not only do you begin to doubt yourself, but everyone around you seems to pull you down as well.
When the panic monster kicks in, you’re not going to be thinking straight. The only way you’re going to fail is if you freak out, so don’t freak out.
Unleash your creativity.
Let’s try an experiment. Next time you’re in a room full of people, ask them to raise their hands if they’re creative. Unless you’re sitting next to artists, most people are going to glance sideways and shuffle uncomfortably. They say things like, “Well I can’t draw very well. I don’t write my own music.” They act as if being creative is something some people are born with. You’re either talented, or you’re not. This is a myth that just won’t die. The truth is everybody is creative, but like an unused muscle, their creativity has atrophied.
Think long and hard. When was the last time you exercised your imagination? When was the last time you were proud of your work? If it was way back when sticking a doodle on the fridge was a milestone, then that’s too long. Sure, you might think it’s easy for kids. They’re not the ones bringing food to the table. Grown-ups need to fend for themselves. They can’t live in tra-la-la-land. While that’s true, here’s something else you need to know. If you act based on your fears, it’s over.
When you connect with your childhood creativity, the solution flows freely. Instead of thinking about your problems, you’re thinking about the amazing ways you can overcome them.
Hack the way your brain is wired.
Did you know the pathway to pleasure is shorter than the pathway to pain? When you’re in a state of self-doubt and worry, you can short-circuit the pain pathway by activating the pleasure pathway. No, nobody’s telling you to procrastinate on important things to binge on Netflix. By allowing yourself to seek fun creative approaches, you grow excited.
Here’s what that could look like in real life. You can go and create something. You can write in a journal. You can listen to music and dance. You can do something that one of my favorite authors, Gay Hendricks talks about in his book that he cowrote with his wife, Conscious Loving Ever After. If you want to reinvigorate something, even a stale relationship in midlife, go to the fridge and combine a bunch of tastes to create a completely crazy snack.
Creativity has no bounds. It could be anything. You could take some sidewalk chalk, or you could go out and paint. When you connect yourself with the little kid inside you, you feel lighter. When you let go of those dark thoughts, you find where the abundance lies. Without realizing it, the right solution appears unexpectedly.
